  • Combination of CDF and D0 measurements of the W boson helicity in top quark decays
  • 2012
  • In: Physical Review D. - 1550-7998 .- 1550-2368. ; 85:7, s. 071106-
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We report the combination of recent measurements of the helicity of the W boson from top quark decay by the CDF and D0 collaborations, based on data samples corresponding to integrated luminosities of 2.7-5.4 fb(-1) of p (p) over bar collisions collected during Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron collider. Combining measurements that simultaneously determine the fractions of W bosons with longitudinal (f(0)) and right-handed (f(+)) helicities, we find f(0) = 0.722 +/- 0.081[+/- 0.062(stat) +/- 0.052(syst)] and f(+) = -0.033 +/- 0.046[+/- 0.034(stat) +/- 0.031(syst)]. Combining measurements where one of the helicity fractions is fixed to the value expected in the standard model, we find f(0) = 0.682 +/- 0.057[+/- 0.035(stat) +/- 0.046(syst)] for fixed f(+) and f(+) = -0.015 +/- 0.035[+/- 0.018(stat) +/- 0.030(syst)] for fixed f(0). The results are consistent with standard model expectations.

  • Measurement of the W Boson Mass with the D0 Detector
  • 2012
  • In: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 108:15, s. 151804-
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We present a measurement of the W boson mass using data corresponding to 4: 3 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected with the D0 detector during Run II at the Fermilab Tevatron p (p) over tilde collider. With a sample of 1 677 394 W -> e nu candidate events, we measure M-W = 80.367 +/- 0.026 GeV. This result is combined with an earlier D0 result determined using an independent Run II data sample, corresponding to 1 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity, to yield MW 80.375 +/- 0.023 GeV.

  • Muon reconstruction and identification with the Run II D0 detector
  • 2014
  • In: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 737, s. 281-294
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We present an overview of the muon reconstruction and identification methods employed by the DO collaboration to analyze the Run II (2001-2011) p (p) over bar data of the Fermilab Tevatron collider at root s = 1.96 TeV. We discuss the performance of these methods, how it is measured using DO data, and how it is properly modeled by the DO simulation program. In its pseudorapidity acceptance, vertical bar eta vertical bar < 2, the muon system identifies high-p(T) muons (p(T) greater than or similar to 10 GeV) with efficiencies ranging from 72% to 89%. Muons tracks are reconstructed in the DO central tracking system with efficiencies ranging from 85% to 92% and with a typical relative momentum resolution of 10% for p(T) = 40 GeV. Isolation criteria reject multijet background with efficiencies of 87-99%.

  • Evidence for Spin Correlation in t(t)over-bar Production
  • 2012
  • In: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 108:3, s. 032004-
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We present a measurement of the ratio of events with correlated t and (t) over bar spins to the total number of t (t) over bar events. This ratio f is evaluated using a matrix-element-based approach in 729 t (t) over bar candidate events with a single lepton l (electron or muon) and at least four jets. The analyzed p (p) over bar collisions data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5: 3 fb(-1) and were collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider operating at a center-of-mass energy root s = 1.96 TeV. Combining this result with a recent measurement of f in dileptonic final states, we find f in agreement with the standard model. In addition, the combination provides evidence for the presence of spin correlation in t (t) over bar events with a significance of more than 3 standard deviations.

  • Improved determination of the width of the top quark
  • 2012
  • In: Physical Review D. - 1550-7998 .- 1550-2368. ; 85:9, s. 091104-
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We present an improved determination of the total width of the top quark, Gamma(t), using 5.4 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected by the D0 Collaboration at the Tevatron p (p) over bar Collider. The total width Gamma(t) is extracted from the partial decay width Gamma(t -> Wb) and the branching fraction B(t -> Wb). Gamma(t -> Wb) is obtained from the t-channel single top-quark production cross section and B(t -> Wb) is measured in t (t) over bar events. For a top mass of 172.5 GeV, the resulting width is Gamma(t) = 2.00(-0.43)(+0.47) GeV. This translates to a top-quark lifetime of tau(t) = (3.29(-0.63)(+0.90)) x 10(-25) s. We also extract an improved direct limit on the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark-mixing matrix element 0.81 < vertical bar V-tb vertical bar <= 1 at 95% C.L. and a limit of vertical bar V-tb'vertical bar < 0.59 for a high-mass fourth-generation bottom quark assuming unitarity of the fourth-generation quark-mixing matrix.

  • Measurement of the inclusive jet cross section in p(p)over-bar collisions at root s=1.96 TeV
  • 2012
  • In: Physical Review D. - 1550-7998 .- 1550-2368. ; 85:5
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We present a measurement of the inclusive jet cross section using the Run II cone algorithm and data collected by the D0 experiment in p (p) over bar collisions at a center-of-mass energy root s = 1.96 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0: 70 fb(-1). The jet energy calibration and the method used to extract the inclusive jet cross section are described. We discuss the main uncertainties, which are dominated by the jet energy scale uncertainty. The results cover jet transverse momenta from 50 GeV to 600 GeV with jet rapidities in the range -2.4 to 2.4 and are compared to predictions using recent proton parton distribution functions. Studies of correlations between systematic uncertainties in transverse momentum and rapidity are presented.

  • Measurement of the top-quark mass in p(p)over-bar collisions using events with two leptons
  • 2012
  • In: Physical Review D. - 1550-7998 .- 1550-2368. ; 86:5
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We present a measurement of the top-quark mass (m(t)) in p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV using t (t) over bar events with two leptons (ee, e mu, or mu mu) and accompanying jets in 4.3 fb(-1) of data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. We analyze the kinematically underconstrained dilepton events by integrating over their neutrino rapidity distributions. We reduce the dominant systematic uncertainties from the calibration of jet energy using a correction obtained from t (t) over bar events with a final state of a single lepton plus jets. We also correct jets in simulated events to replicate the quark flavor dependence of the jet response in data. We measure m(t) = 173.7 +/- 2.8 (stat) +/- 1.5 (syst) GeV and combining with our analysis in 1 fb(-1) of preceding data we measure m(t) = 174.0 +/- 2.4 (stat) +/- 1.4 (syst) GeV. Taking into account statistical and systematic correlations, a combination with the D0 matrix element result from both data sets yields m(t) = 173.9 +/- 1.9 (stat) +/- 1.6 (syst) GeV.

  • Measurement of the WZ and ZZ production cross sections using leptonic final states in 8.6 fb(-1) of p(p)over-bar collisions
  • 2012
  • In: Physical Review D. - 1550-7998 .- 1550-2368. ; 85:11, s. 112005-
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We study the processes p (p) over bar -> WZ -> l(+) vl(+) l(-) and p (p) over bar -> ZZ -> l(+) l(-) v (v) over bar, where l = e or mu. Using 8: 6 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron collider, we measure the WZ production cross section to be 4.50(-0.66)(+0.63) pb which is consistent with, but slightly larger than, the prediction of the standard model. The ZZ cross section is measured to be 1: 64 +/- 0: 46 pb, in agreement with a prediction of the standard model. Combination with an earlier analysis of the ZZ -> l(+) l(-) l(+) l(-) channel yields a ZZ cross section of 1.44(-0.34)(+0.35) pb.

  • Measurements of single top quark production cross sections and vertical bar V(tb)vertical bar in p(p)over-bar collisions at root s=1.96 TeV
  • 2011
  • In: Physical Review D. - 1550-7998 .- 1550-2368. ; 84:11, s. 112001-
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We present measurements of production cross sections of single top quarks in p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb(-1) collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We select events with an isolated electron or muon, an imbalance in transverse energy, and two, three, or four jets, with one or two of them containing a bottom hadron. We obtain an inclusive cross section of sigma(p (p) over bar -> tb + X, tqb + X) = 3.43(-0.74)(+0.73) pb and use it to extract the CKM matrix element 0.79 < vertical bar V(tb)vertical bar <= 1 at the 95% C.L. We also measure sigma(p<(p)over bar> -> tb + X) = 0.68(-0.35)(+0.38) pb and sigma(p (p) over bar -> tqb + X) = 2.86(-0.63)(+0.69) pb when assuming, respectively, tqb and tb production rates as predicted by the standard model.

  • Measurements of WW and WZ Production in W plus jets Final States in p(p)over-bar Collisions
  • 2012
  • In: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 108:18, s. 181803-
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We study WW and WZ production with lvqq (l = e, mu) final states using data collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider corresponding to 4.3 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity from p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV. Assuming the ratio between the production cross sections sigma(WW) and sigma(WZ) as predicted by the standard model, we measure the total WV (V = W, Z) cross section to be sigma(WV) = 19.6(-3.0)(+3.2) pb and reject the background-only hypothesis at a level of 7.9 standard deviations. We also use b-jet discrimination to separate the WZ component from the dominant WW component. Simultaneously fitting WW and WZ contributions, we measure sigma(WW) = 15.9(-3.2)(+3.7) pb and sigma(WZ) = 3.3(-3.3)(+4.1) pb, which is consistent with the standard model predictions.
